The keel for USS America (CV 66) was laid on Jan. 9, 1961, at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Newport News, Va. The America had an active 31 years of service, deploying to Vietnam, Libya, the Persian Gulf and the former Yugoslavia.
